To really understand another person’s point of view, you need to climb inside their skin and walk around for a bit.
Make Them or Break Them – What Rules do for Accountability
A good rule is a beautiful thing. I love rules because they define the systems in our business. By defining the boundaries of what we can and can’t do, the rules give us the freedom to everything else, and anything else, within those boundaries And here’s the thing – most of the time our ideas don’t go anywhere near those limits. If our outrageous and outlandish – and courageous – ideas drive us closer to achieving our vision, then we can implement them. Having said that, the limits that the rules define are equally important. Rules are reckoning tools – they are tools you use to hold your team to account. You see, there are two ways that you can drive results in your business: You can push for an outcome using sheer willpower. You’ll end every day exhausted and you’ll watch performance decline as everyone else’s will slowly chips away at yours, or… You can put rules in place that guide your team towards the vision, and away from distractions, mistakes and pitfalls. It’s systems thinking – you create the system to achieve the vision, then you work inside it. And you hold people to account when they deviate […]

Sympathy vs. Empathy
Sympathy vs. Empathy Ever wondered why you’re just not getting through to people? Whether it’s at work or in your personal life, you might be finding it hard to get results from others, find that people keep coming back to you with the same issues, and you just can’t seem to keep them accountable. This can be tracked back to how you react to others – with sympathy, or with empathy. And yes, there is a huge difference that can see you getting much better results out of your career and life. On the surface, it may not seem like there is much difference between sympathy and empathy. However, it’s very important to differentiate between the two in order to harness their true worth in your workplace. What is sympathy? Sympathy is a feeling of pity or sadness for someone, often due to a misfortune that has happened in their life or due to something that has stopped them from achieving a goal or deadline. When you show sympathy towards another person, you can often become entwined in their ongoing life problems and issues. You can sometimes sympathise with them too much, which can lead to negative effects. The other […]
The cost of the stories you buy
Have you ever had a colleague or employee try to explain why they didn’t meet your expectations with a task? Perhaps they told you they didn’t have the resources, they didn’t have enough time, or something else got in the way. When you believe someone else’s excuse for not completing a task, not meeting a deadline, or for letting you down, you are in fact paying for it. This happens all too often in the corporate world, where it can cost you both time and money. Don’t fool yourself that it was for free, it did cost you. Don’t fall for people’s excuses It is incredibly easy to get wrapped up in your day-to-day business issues and dealings that you begin to believe the excuses you are fed by others when they don’t deliver by the proposed deadlines or don’t complete work tasks up to scratch. Perhaps they needed more information from you, didn’t have the resources, something got in the way, or they simply ran out of time? Whatever their excuse is, it’s important to remember that they are unacceptable, and they are just that, excuses. As a leader within your organisation, whenever you accept an excuse for why […]

What stories do you hear?
Who doesn’t love a good story? Story telling can in fact be a great strategic business tool, used to teach, inspire, build trust, and also of course, sell. They can change the way we feel, how we act, and what we think. And of course, they can be used to develop a value system for your business. Telling stories Story telling is a part of everyday life, with some people telling better stories than others. Some are born with this gift, whilst others might struggle or need to learn this skill. In business, storytelling is a great tool. Not only good for your business strategy, but it can also support you to succeed without the need to tick all of the ‘right’ or typical business boxes. Generally, if you can tell a good story, then all you need to do to create trust within and towards your business is to hold up your integrity and do what you said you’re going to do. Standing by these black and white areas in your business rather than delving into grey areas is all about sticking to that story. Learning to tell stories about who you are, why your business is here, and […]
