….. this is called personal Leadership isn’t it?
Let me introduce myself,
My name is Jennifer Elliott and I want to tell you a short story to introduce to you the whole idea of leadership and what it takes. This is a story about a young man walking down Pitt St in Sydney carrying a guitar case. He is well dressed and looking a little lost when he stops for a moment and asks an old tramp for directions. “Please sir, could you tell me, how do I get to the famous Sydney Opera House?” |
The old tramp looks the well dressed young man up an down very slowly and then pauses reflectively for a very long moment before he says, “Practise my son, lots and lots of practise.” And then he walks away! |

This is a great story of what you have to put in to get where you want to go, even if the advice was slightly misguided in this case. The same is true of being a great leader in your family, community and business. All great leaders follow The Seven Universal Principles of Leadership.

It Takes Practise to be Masterful

Let’s take a look at what four famous teenagers did way back in 1960. For many long years before their world wide fame The Beatles travelled from Liverpool to Hamburg in Germany to play in sleazy bars and night clubs. They played and practised for audiences who were less than enthusiastic. |
It is also true that when they started out as a band they were not a very good rock and roll band. Yet they continued to play night after night following their passion. Over a period of just 4 years from 1960 to 1964 they played over 1,200 times and many of these gigs were over 8 hours straight. Just in that stretch alone that is a total playing time of 9,600 hours. Experts agree that to be truly in masterful any field it requires at least 10,000 hours of concentrated and reflective practice. |

That’s a whole lot of practise and I’m sorry but here is the bad news. There are no recorded instances of fluking it. The urban legend of the pure genius who picks up a guitar one day and becomes a master the next day is rubbish.
And here is some really Good news for you…
Strong leadership, just like your character can be developed over time through careful, intentional practice.
Sun Tzu was a great Chinese leader who lived in the 6th century BC and what he said about leadership all those years ago still applies today. Leadership is a function of character, not an accident of birth or a prerogative of position. Leadership, at its most fundamental level, comes from within.
As the old tramp said to the young man: “Practise my son, lots and lots of practise.”
What you practise becomes very important. Let me give you an absurd situation so that you can see my point. Just suppose that you are headed for Flinders St Station in central Melbourne. A map of the city would be very useful and by some printing error you have a map of Brisbane. Can you imagine your frustration and what would happen to you when you used this map for your navigation?
No matter how hard or how long you practise, how fast and efficient you become or how happily you did it, you would still be lost. The wrong map in the wrong city will not get you where you want to go.
Our crazy example shows us that to be masterful is any field there are fundamental principles that must be followed for success. First of all get the right map for where you want to go.
